Humanistic Psychotherapy

Humanistic psychotherapy (counseling) emphasizes the belief that individuals are inherently good. In this approach, the humanistic therapist believes that every individual is responsible for his/her behavior. We believe that adults have the ability and resources to move forward by making more constructive choices in their lives. In some sense, life is simply the culmination of our choices.

In Humanistic Psychotherapy, great attention is given to solving current problems with specific strategies. Also, we believe strongly in a cognitive behavioral approach to problem solving. This supports the idea that our problems are often rooted in the way we think. When we change our thinking, we will always change the way we feel and behave, i.e. reduce or eliminate depression, anxiety, stress, marital problems, etc. It is normal for all of us to experience a variety of stressors in our lives. It is NOT the stressors that really cause us problems. It is the way we think and respond to the stressors that is important. This new way of thinking will lead to more productive, satisfying, and meaningful behavior resulting in more constructive problem resolution.

In the tradition of a humanistic approach to problem solving, while the past has some relevance to who we are today, less attention given to this and emphasis is placed on "where we are now" and "where do we want to go"?

We believe that virtually all problems can be solved in a reasonable time frame. We value short term therapy for lasting results and encourage individuals to come in touch with their authentic self which can be valued and cherished.

For over twenty-five years, it has been so rewarding and satisfying for me as a psychologist to see how applying the values and strategies listed above has resulted in the most wonderful changes in individuals' ability to solve the problems that face them as a part of the human condition.

I invite you to "Begin your journey of self discovery and a more meaningful life."
