Now that 2018 has rolled around, people all across the United States are settling in to the resolutions that they have made for the new year. For some, it’s spending more time on the hobbies they enjoy; for others, it’s making healthier choices when they’re at the grocery store.

Some couples have likely made joint resolutions as well and that often includes enjoying a happier, healthier marriage. Of course that will mean some of them will see a therapist for marriage counseling.

Whether you’re in the market for relationship counseling or not, there are a few things you can do to enjoy a happier relationship regardless, and as a matter of fact, that’s the topic of today’s blog!

Support Makes All the Difference in the World

One of the absolute best things you can do for your marriage is to actively practice the art of being supportive. The keywords here are “actively” and “art.” What that means is that it’s going to take a bit of practice to get it right. Let’s break it down a little further.

Being actively supportive of your partner means that you’re making a conscious effort to do just that. Does your spouse enjoy spending some time in the workshop in order to make projects for your house? Let him or her know that you appreciate it! Does he or she spend extra time at the office? Make sure that person knows that their effort hasn’t gone unnoticed!

You’ll also notice that I mentioned that supporting your partner is an art. There are subtle nuances that you’ll need to take into account and each relationship is different, but as they say, practice makes perfect.

Listen For Subtext

When you’ve been in a relationship, you start to notice that your significant other has a particular way of saying things without saying them. Make it a point to be aware of these things so that you can start a conversation, because as you probably know, good conversation is the key to a healthy relationship.

For example, if your spouse has been unhappy with their job for awhile, make an effort to talk about it. Ask if he or she would like to look for another job and what you can do to help. Sometimes the answer will be that there’s nothing you can do, but trust me when I say that the best thing you can do is to simply be supportive in the best way that you know how.
